I wrote many songs while working on the soundtrack for the latest film, Shelley Niro's Cafe Daughter. It's the process I use in searching for the theme, the emotional story underlying the film.
It is a beautiful story based loosely on one of the first Indigenous women to become a physician in Canada, Dr. Lillian Dyck. Born in 1945 to a Cree mother and Chinese father, she traversed seemingly the insurmountable obstacles of colonial oppression.
I decided to record some of the songs that helped to shape the musical score and to share the work I am doing now. Reflecting love and loss in Cafe Daughter, The Sky is Falling is the first to be released as a single EP on Friday, July 28, 2023.
